The government of the Republic of China extends its warm congratulations to the government and people of São Tomé and Príncipe on the election of their new president, Mr. Evaristo Carvalho, as well as its sincere wish to further strengthen diplomatic relations with this West African ally.

On August 15, Mr. Carvalho was announced winner of the country’s presidential election by the Constitutional Court of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. On September 3, the national congress will swear in President-elect Carvalho, who represented the ruling Independent Democratic Action party and earned 81.64 percent of votes in the second round of voting

São Tomé and Príncipe has undergone six presidential elections since adopting its democratic election process in 1990, thereby continuously deepening its democratization. The second round of voting for the presidential election followed democratic practices, earning recognition and praise from international electoral observers. The ROC once again congratulates São Tomé and Príncipe for successfully completing another democratic election. (E)
