Press Release No. 129

The government of the Republic of China reiterates that Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu were formally restored to ROC rule on October 25, 1945, after the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the sovereign rights of the ROC government thereof are unequivocal.

The declaration that mainland China issued on September 4, 1958, during the 823 Artillery Bombardment, stating that Taiwan and Penghu were part of its territory, was divorced from the facts, devoid of substance, and without effect. The ROC sternly refuted the claim at the time, and to this day the ROC government remains firm in its position that it does not, and will not, accept mainland China’s false declaration. (E)
