No.021 Aug 11, 2009
MOFA establishes donation account for victims of Typhoon Morakot

The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) deeply appreciates the international community’s messages of condolences and willingness to provide humanitarian assistance after the devastation of Typhoon Morakot. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has established an exclusive donation account for overseas contributions.

On behalf of the government of Japan, Interchange Association, Japan (IAJ) offered 10 million yen to MOFA’s Association of East Asian Relations destined for rescue efforts. The U.S. State Department and the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) contacted respectively MOFA and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) to express sympathy of the U.S. government and their willingness to assist. El Salvador Ambassador Francisco Ricardo Santana Berrios, Acting Head of the Diplomatic Corps in Taiwan, addressed a letter of condolences on behalf of Taiwan's diplomatic allies to Minister of Foreign Affairs Francisco H.L. Ou to express solidarity and consolation.

Taiwan is grateful for the support and comfort of its diplomatic allies, including the Holy See, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia, Nauru and Guatemala, and countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Hungary, Israel, the Republic of Korea and South Africa.

In order to facilitate overseas donations to the victims’ families, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened an exclusive account. Overseas pledges can be made to:

Mega International Commercial Bank
Account number: 007-09-087816
Account name: Ministry of the Interior Donation Account
Swift Code: ICBCTWTP007.

Foreign currency checks can be payable to the “Ministry of the Interior, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China”. Cash or checks can also be transferred to the Ministry of the Interior through Taiwan’s overseas Embassies and Representative Offices. Donation receipts will be issued accordingly by the Ministry of the Interior.(E)
