Mr. Michael Eitan, Chairman of the Taiwan Friendship Group of the Israeli Parliament arrived in Taiwan

Mr. Michael Eitan, Chairman of the Taiwan Friendship Group of the Israeli Parliament, and Mrs. Eitan will lead a delegation of six parliamentarians to Taiwan on March 22, 2007, for a five-day visit. The delegation will meet Vice President Annette Lu, Deputy Speaker Jung-Chi Chung, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs, Fadah Hsieh, Secretary-General of the National Security Council Phd. Tan-Sun Chen, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Hou. The delegation will also visit the Department of Health, as well as the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission. The delegation will exchange opinions with cabinet members on matters of mutual concern. The Friendship Medal of Diplomacy will be conferred upon Chairman Eitan by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in appreciation of his contributions to substantive bilateral relations. The delegation will visit the National Palace Museum and other famous attractions, and is scheduled to leave Taiwan on March 26.

Since the establishment of representative offices in 1993, Taiwan and Israel have engaged in various cooperative projects. The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding on agricultural cooperation, a healthcare cooperation agreement, and a technology cooperation agreement. Many Taiwanese enterprises from the electronics, information and communications sectors, have invested in Israel. With regards to cultural exchanges, there are six Israeli students who have received the Taiwan Scholarship and are currently pursuing advanced education in Taiwan. Israel also provides short-term scholarships to Taiwanese students. Chairman Eitan’s visit will further consolidate bilateral relations between Taiwan and Israel. (E)
