Director General Daniel Liao Briefs Consular Association of Washington on Cross-Strait Relations (Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle)
Post Date:2010-1-27

Director General Daniel Liao of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Seattle was invited to brief the Consular Association of Washington (CAoW) on recent development across the Taiwan Strait on January 19.
Liao started his presentation by referring to the recent relief work after the Haitian earthquake. He elaborated on Taiwan's quick response and donations to Haiti, and used the surprisingly neutral and no-strings-attached approaches by both sides of the Taiwan Strait in Haiti as a proof of recent détente across the Strait.
Liao then explained Taiwan's mainland China policy, foreign policy and economic policy after President Ma Ying-jeou took office in 2008, and how these policies have transformed the Taiwan Strait from a "dangerous flashpoint" into a stabilizing force in Southeast Asia.
Liao's presentation has provided the latest information which many CAoW members found valuable in their study on Asian and international affairs. Some of them stayed after the presentation to exchange views with Liao.
