On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Matthew W. Chou, the Representative of the Taipei Liaison Office in the Republic of South Africa, on February 28, 2018 conferred the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy to the Inkatha Freedom Party President Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in recognition of his contributions in promoting bilateral relationship  between the two countries.
Representative Chou praised Prince Buthelezi for promoting bilateral exchanges between Taiwan and the South Africa.
Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is the member of the Zulu Royalty, served as the Minister of Home Affairs from 1994 to 2004, and had sworn in as acting President of Republic of South Africa several times.
In his acceptance speech, Prince Buthelezi described his relationship with Taiwan as one of the most valuable experiences in his political career. He said:
“I am deeply humbled to receive the Taiwan Friendship Medal of Diplomacy, in recognition of my effort to promote good relations between Taiwan and South Africa. It is appropriate that this Medal is called a Friendship Medal and not just a Diplomacy Medal, because although my work has been done at a political level, it has always been done out of friendship. More importantly, my relationship with Taiwan is a relationship built on principle.”
