Two veterans associations of the Republic of China (Taiwan)—the R.O.C. Veterans Association in Toronto (ROCVAT) and the Ontario Chapter of the Veterans Association of the Republic of China (VAROC)—took part in the 97th Warriors’ Day Parade in Toronto on August 18. Waving R.O.C. and Canadian flags, members of the two associations marched with great enthusiasm. The female members of ROCVAT contingent wore R.O.C. flag T-shirts and walked in march step. They were among the most eye-catching groups in the parade.
The 97th Warriors’ Day Parade took place at the Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. This year’s parade commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI and the 70th anniversary of the first-ever UN Peacekeeping Mission—UN Truce Supervision Organization. Many veterans of various ranks, along with numerous military marching contingents and bands, attended the event. During the 90-minute parade, all marching contingents and bands marched along Princes’ Boulevard to the sounds of pipes and drums. When the marching groups, including ROCVAT and VAROC, passed the main dais and saluted the presidium, they were warmly welcomed by the cheering crowds.
ROCVAT has attended the Warriors’ Day Parade since 1989. It assembled more than 50 men and women this year to march in the parade, including the flag team composed of male members and a women’s team. They were joined by veteran Li Yan-kai, who at age 105 rode on his motorized wheelchair to participate in the celebrations. Meanwhile, VAROC has participated in the event each year since 2009.
Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto Catherine Hsu, TECO Deputy Director-General Michael Chen, Director of the TECO Cultural Center Shu-ling Lee, Deputy Director of the TECO Cultural Center Jhih-jhong Dong, their respective families, as well as five participants of the 2018 Taiwan Youth and Overseas Expatriate Bridging Program also attended the memorable occasion. Prior to the start of the parade, TECO Director-General Hsu visited the two R.O.C. associations and thanked them for representing the R.O.C. at the event.
