MOFA launches co-produced TV shows with broadcasters from New Southbound Policy target countries

As part of the government’s creative and people-oriented approach to the New Southbound Policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has collaborated with four popular broadcasters from India, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, respectively, to produce prime time TV shows showcasing Taiwan. Presented in local languages and made entirely on location by the channels’ in-house production teams, the programs are hosted by famous faces and tailored to the tastes of their respective audiences.

MOFA Vice Minister Miguel Li-jey Tsao was on hand at the project’s launch ceremony Oct. 22 at the Grand Hotel in Taipei City. Also in attendance were members of the production teams from co-producers India’s Zee TV, the Philippines’ CNN, Thailand’s Channel 5 and Vietnam’s HTV.

Using the theme “Embracing Taiwan,” each broadcaster shot two 30-minute episodes in high definition focusing on the shared traits between Taiwan and their home country. For example, Zee TV’s show examines Taiwan’s dynamic high-tech and agricultural industries, CNN illustrates the nation’s diverse music and food cultures, Channel 5 takes audiences on a journey through the country’s stunning landscapes and welcoming communities, and HTV goes in-depth on social programs and green technology.
 
The shows introduce government policies such as the visa-waiver program for NSP target countries, five-plus-two innovative industries initiative and Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program. In addition, viewers can learn about how the government is working to prevent African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease in Taiwan, as well as the reforms that led to the country’s removal from the European Commission’s warning list for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

All filming was completed in September and October. Set to air in November, the programs will present Taiwan’s diverse cultures while covering everything from culinary delights to eco-tourism. These shows will enable viewers from each of the participating countries to learn more about Taiwan, helping to drive demand for future collaborations and exchanges. (E)
