Archbishop Jean-Louis Bruguès, librarian of the Vatican Library and archivist of the Vatican Secret Archives, is visiting Taiwan from November 1 to 7 at the invitation of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

An example of the increasingly extensive cooperation taking place between Taiwan and the Holy See, the Archbishop’s visit will advance cooperation and exchange with Taiwan regarding the compilation of a library catalog, the conservation of old books and cultural artifacts, and the application of digital technologies in strengthening library management and archiving.

During his stay, Archbishop Bruguès will call on Vice President Chen Chien-jen, and visit the National Central Library, the National Development Council’s National Archives Administration, the Beitou branch of Taipei Public Library, and Kaohsiung Public Library, as well as deliver lectures at Fu Jen Catholic University and Blessed Imelda’s School. In addition to attending a reception hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs David Tawei Lee, the archbishop will also visit sites of cultural and economic interest, including the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 and Kenting National Park; and a number of local churches and temples, including the Dominican St. Albert’s Priory, the Wanchin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Pingtung County, Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Longshan Temple and Dalongdong Bao’an Temple.

With this year marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the ROC and the Holy See, bilateral exchanges continue to grow closer in a range of areas thanks to the joint efforts of both sides. Going forward, Taiwan will continue to strengthen mutual high-level visits with the Vatican, as well as related cooperation and exchange. (E)
