On the morning of October 30, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu spoke by telephone with French Representative Jean-Franҫois Casabonne-Masonnave, Director of the French Office in Taipei, regarding the recent terrorist attacks in France. On behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen, Minister Wu offered his deepest condolences and sympathies to the French victims and their family members. He also represented our government and Taiwanese people in strongly condemning the terrorist attacks and religious extremism. Minister Wu assured Director Casabonne-Masonnave that, in these difficult times, Taiwan stands with the government and people of France.

Director Casabonne-Masonnave expressed France’s sincere gratitude for Minister Wu’s condolences. He also stated that France is currently facing a number of challenges stemming from terrorism and that the friendship and solidarity shown by Taiwan and other democracies at this moment are immensely appreciated. He added that he would immediately relay the condolences offered by the government and people of Taiwan to Paris.

MOFA stresses that Taiwan and France share common values of democracy, human rights, and religious freedom. Any terrorist attack on France is an attack on these shared values. In democratic societies, different religions and beliefs are respected, and differences of religious opinions are resolved through dialogue. As our country was founded on the principle of human rights, MOFA strongly condemns the recent terrorist attacks and religious extremism in France.

MOFA and Taipei Representative Office in Paris will continue to monitor the developments and will maintain close contact with relevant government agencies to provide necessary assistance to Taiwan citizens in France and foreign citizens in Taiwan, ensuring the safety of all. (E)
