ROC President Tsai Ing-wen extended condolences August 23 on the passing of S. R. Nathan, former president of Singapore, who died August 22 at the age of 92. Furthermore, the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore to convey deepest sympathies to the Singapore government on behalf of the ROC government and people.

S. R. Nathan was the sixth president of Singapore and spent more than 60 years in public service. He held important security and diplomatic positions, including director of Singapore’s Security and Intelligence Division, high commissioner to Malaysia, and ambassador to the United States.

In addition to being an outstanding political leader, former president Nathan demonstrated great concern for laborers and disadvantaged groups throughout his life, and made tremendous contributions to social work and academic research. The ROC maintains excellent relations with Singapore, and mourns the passing of the former head of state together with the people of Singapore, who have expressed profound appreciation for his extraordinary service to their country.
