The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania announced on the evening of April 12 that it would donate €50,000 to assist with Taiwan’s reconstruction work following the earthquake in Hualien. In a press release and a post on the social media platform X, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis said that the donation was a demonstration of Lithuania’s solidarity with the people of Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely thanks Lithuania for its concern for Taiwan and for its generous donation to assist with postdisaster reconstruction.

Immediately following the earthquake in Hualien, Minister Landsbergis and Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čymilitė-Nielsen, among other Lithuanian political figures, used social media posts, text messages, and other channels to convey their concern for Taiwan and express willingness to provide assistance. When announcing the donation to Taiwan, Minister Landsbergis said that Taiwan and Lithuania had cooperated in many domains over recent years, including international development, and referred to Taiwan’s participation in and important contribution to reconstruction projects conducted by Lithuania in Ukraine.

MOFA reiterates that Taiwan and Lithuania are not only staunch and like-minded friends but also goodwill partners that engage in cooperation and mutual assistance and jointly contribute to international society. The two countries have worked together to rebuild schools in Ukraine destroyed in the war, including the Rūta kindergarten in Irpin and a secondary school in Borodianka, both in Kyiv Oblast, which have since been reopened. Working hand in hand, Taiwan and Lithuania will continue to do their utmost to firmly defend democratic values and serve as a force for good in the international community. (E)
