The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic announced on the evening of April 29 that it would donate US$150,000 to assist with Taiwan’s reconstruction work in the wake of the earthquake in Hualien. This marked another concrete action by the Czech Republic to demonstrate concern over Taiwan’s disaster situation following messages of condolences extended immediately after the earthquake by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Senate President Miloš Vystrčil, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová, and other prominent political figures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely appreciates the Czech Republic’s concern and generosity.

Taiwan and the Czech Republic are not only like-minded allies but also cooperative partners engaged in mutual assistance and concerted efforts to contribute to the international community. Whenever Taiwan has faced challenges, the Czech Republic has staunchly stood by its side. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan donated 1.35 million surgical masks and other antipandemic supplies to the Czech Republic, which donated 30,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan. The donation from the Czech Republic following the recent earthquake in support of reconstruction efforts again underscores its friendship and concern for Taiwan.

Taiwan will build on the existing solid foundation to steadfastly deepen exchanges with the Czech Republic and expand their substantive bilateral partnership through mutually beneficial and reciprocal collaboration. (E)
