No. 199

The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses its concern and strongly condemns North Korea for its nuclear test on September 9, in contempt of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087, 2094, and 2270, and in defiance of the international community. The nuclear test, the fifth of its kind, was conducted at 9:30 AM in Punggye-ri in Kilju County, North Hamgyong Province, and was a follow-up to the test that took place on January 6.

The ROC government has consistently supported nuclear nonproliferation in the region, and solemnly urges North Korea to abide by relevant UN Security Council resolutions and refrain from taking action detrimental to regional security. It reiterates support for resolving the Korean Peninsula issue through peaceful dialogue and calls on all sides to cooperate on maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in East Asia as a whole.
